Shoe Bomber, Richard Reid

Richard Reid (b. 1973), aka the "Shoe Bomber," is a British terrorist affiliated with Al Qaeda who attempted to bomb American Airlines Flight 63 from Paris, France to Miami, Florida on December 22, 2001. He reportedly trained at an Al Qaeda camp in Afghanistan before attempting the attack. Reid was given modified shoes packed with explosives and planned to detonate them during the flight. However, he drew suspicion quickly due to his disheveled appearance, refusal to answer any questions from airline staff and because he had not packed any luggage for the international flight. He was subdued by other passengers before he could activate the explosives and was arrested at Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. In January 2003, he was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without parole.
