Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is part of Iran’s armed forces, separate from the traditional military but complementary to it. The group is tasked with defending Iran’s revolutionary regime, which took power in 1979, and answers directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. IRGC consists of multiple service branches, including the Quds Force, which serves as an external operations force and the operator of Iranian proxies and militant forces in the Middle East, including Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq and Syria.
The IRGC is designated as a terror organization by the U.S. and Canada and has been sanctioned by the European Union.
