Mullah Mohammed Omar

Mullah Mohammed Omar (1960-2013) was the founder of the Taliban. He was born in Khakrez, Afghanistan in 1960. Starting in 1994, the Taliban began to seize large parts of Afghanistan, and Mullah Omar was appointed as head of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. During his tenure, he harbored Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, allowing them to plan, organize and execute the 9/11 terror attacks. He was deposed as the head of the government and went into hiding after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. He died of tuberculosis in Zabul Province, Afghanistan in April 2013.
