Islamist extremism

Islamist extremism is a marginal and rigid interpretation of Islam which refuses to acknowledge the legitimacy of other faiths and secular forms of government. Instead, Islamist extremists declare anyone who does not adhere to their restrictive interpretation of Islam as an infidel. Islamist extremists believe that government should implement an extremely conservative interpretation of Sharia law in order to govern legitimately, and often advocate violence in order to shift society to this ideal. Islamist extremists tend to hold highly antisemitic, homophobic and misogynistic beliefs, and oppose modernity, tolerance, and diverse beliefs. While all Islamist terrorist groups are Islamist extremists, not all Islamist extremists are terrorists; many Islamists espouse these beliefs without taking real-world action.
