ISIS

ISIS stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Though it no longer holds territory in Iraq and Syria, it has persisted as an insurgent movement and seeks to reconstitute itself both in the Middle East and via affiliates in Western/Central Africa, the Philippines and East Asia. Its violent rhetoric and propaganda continue to inspire the majority of terror plots and criminal activity linked to domestic Islamist extremism. Its precursor organization, Al Qaeda in Iraq, was founded by Abu Musab al Zarqawi in 2004.
