Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs)

Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs) are a type of long-ranged weapon that use concentrated electromagnetic energy fired at the speed of light to damage and destroy enemy targets, such as missiles, satellites or drones. DEW research has been ongoing for several decades, and the United States and other countries have been developing DEWs to improve missile and drone defense systems, among other uses.

Some conspiracy theorists and extremists have falsely alleged that DEWs have been used to start devastating wildfires around the world, as part of “land grab” efforts orchestrated by global elites or the federal government. Baseless claims linking directed energy weapons to wildfires in Texas; Maui, Hawaii; Paradise, California; and Chile have been previously debunked.
