Black flags

Black flags are inspired by descriptions of the Prophet Muhammad's battle flag, which was reportedly a black flag with white lettering on it. Therefore, many Islamist extremist groups adopt various interpretations of this image to use as their own. Though the design of the emblem varies, the words on it almost always are the Shahada, the basic profession of faith in Islam, which translates to "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger."
