Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò (1941-) is a retired Italian traditionalist Catholic priest and conspiracy theorist whose public statements engage with antisemitic dog whistles and, on occasion, overt antisemitism.  Viganò has claimed that a sinister plot to establish a New World Order is being carried out by agents of the “Davos Sanhedrin,” an antisemitic reference to an ancient Jewish judicial body. In addition, Viganò’s writings and interviews make frequent references to globalists, a term that is often used as an antisemitic codeword. He has been an outspoken backer of the Big Lie that Donald Trump won the 2020 election, and he is a vocal supporter of Russia in its war with Ukraine. In fact, Viganò praises Russia as a bulwark against Satan. Viganò formerly served as the papal nuncio (ambassador) to the United States from 2011 to 2016. In 2018, Viganò gained notoriety when he wrote an open letter to Pope Francis in which he accused the Bishop of Rome of supporting a “homosexual current” within the Catholic Church. Viganò’s work frequently appears in traditionalist Catholic publications such as Catholic Family News, The Remnant and LifeSiteNews. Because of his status within the official church hierarchy, traditionalist Catholics and their outlets frequently rely on Viganò to lend credibility to their extremist positions.
