Westboro Baptist Church

The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is a Kansas-based homophobic and antisemitic hate group founded and originally led by Fred Phelps, Sr., with Phelps' family members making up much of the membership of the group. Though most of its activities are homophobic in nature, since April 2009, WBC has also targeted dozens of Jewish leaders and institutions around the U.S., including staging public protests and mailing a virulently antisemitic DVD in 2010. Other WBC targets include schools the group deems accepting of homosexuality; Catholic, Lutheran and other Christian denominations that WBC feels are heretical; and funerals for American soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, gay individuals and people murdered or killed in accidents like plane crashes.
