Weimar Problems Require Weimar Solutions

The expression “Weimar problems require Weimar solutions” is a reference to the Weimar Republic, the democratic government in Germany from 1919 to 1933, which the Nazi government replaced. A variation of this phrase can be traced back to 1996, when infamous Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel (now deceased) said in an interview, “In the United States, … you will have Weimar conditions and you’ll have solutions to the Weimar conditions.” Other slight variations to the expression include “Weimar problems require Aryan solutions” and “Weimar conditions require Weimar solutions.”

Today, the expression can be found across both mainstream and extremist social media platforms and forums. The Weimar “problems” or "conditions" in the expression refer to the perceived societal problems in Germany during that time, which users of the phrase typically believe included “degeneracy” such as prostitution, open homosexuality, drinking, Jewish influence, etc.

The Weimar “solutions” refer to the Nazi dictatorial government that took power in 1933, its upending of democracy, and the ruthless and repressive measures instituted thereafter. Extremists today use this phrase in response to what they contend are today’s societal ills, including transgenderism, homosexuality, non-white immigration, drag shows, Jewish politicians and alleged child grooming.

Their use of the Weimar expression, often accompanied by Nazi imagery, implies that their solution is similarly to install a national socialist dictatorship to rid society of these supposed problems. Online posts of this phrase frequently include images of pride events, antisemitic memes, transgendered individuals along with images of Hitler, Nazis and swastikas.
