The “parents’ rights movement” (also known as “parental rights”) is a loose coalition of right-wing and far-right-wing organizations and interest groups that advocate for right-wing causes in schools. “Parental rights groups” often promote policies, ideas and language that are inspired by or otherwise intersect with intolerance or even extremism or hate. The movement has existed for several decades, shifting its focus several times over that span, including opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, educational curricula on racial justice and racism, and immigration. Many have also regularly employed rhetoric or tropes originating in extremist spaces or advocated for policies championed by extremists.
