Swastika

The swastika is an ancient symbol that emerged independently among many cultures. Before the 20th century, its use was almost always benign, and it is still a common religious symbol across Asia associated with good fortune. However, it was adopted in the early 20th century by German right-wing movements and used as the symbol for the Nazi Party beginning in 1920. Since then, the swastika has become perhaps the most notorious hate symbol in Western culture.

This database provides an overview of many of the terms and individuals used by or associated with movements and groups that subscribe to and/or promote extremist or hateful ideologies.
