Burning Cross (symbol)

The burning cross is one of the most potent hate symbols, popularized as a terror symbol by the Ku Klux Klan. The symbol emerged in the early 20th century with the Second Ku Klux Klan, which adopted it from Thomas Dixon, author of the 1905 novel The Clansman, which inaccurately portrayed the First Ku Klux Klan as engaging in cross burnings.
