The University of Central Florida (UCF) has a Hillel, Chabad and Jewish Greek life organizations, as well as a Judaic Studies Department.
What’s Happening on Campus?
In February 2023, an individual shouted "Heil Hitler" inside of the student housing center, and in July 2023, a student reportedly experienced antisemitic harassment from a fellow student.
A UCF student was arrested in January 2024 for making antisemitic threats at a pro-Israel group’s event on campus, and there has been regular tabling at the Student Union with signs saying “From the River to the Sea.”
Students for a Democratic Society has formed on campus.
In September 2024, multiple antisemitic reviews were posted on Google for the UCF Hillel, including a comment reading: "I walked in and saw them celebrating the destruction of 30,000 Palestinian lives." In October 2024, at an anti-Israel gathering organized to celebrate the anniversary of Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, protesters held signs with messages that included “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” and a speaker also appeared to praise Hamas terrorists when speaking about “soldiers on the ground.”
University Policies and Responsive Action
UCF President Alexander Cartwright has issued strong statements against terrorism and antisemitism. The UCF Police Department has been responsive to a number of antisemitic and anti-Israel incidents, as well as increased its presence at Palestinian solidarity marches and Jewish events like the Israel Block Party.
In advance of the 2024-25 academic year, UCF developed new policies to prevent occupied buildings, destroyed property, physical violence and anti-Israel coursework.
In August 2024, the Chancellor of the State University System of Florida called for a review of all state university courses for anti-Israel or antisemitic bias, including at University of Central Florida.
